Default Looking for HD feed from The Weather Channel - 31-05-2008, 07:28 PM

Hello group,

I am trying to find the new MPEG-4 HD feed of TWC ( The Weather Channel )

Has anyone come across this feed ?

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Bill

Do you mean the versions found on either Dish Network or DirecTV?

No, I'm looking for the actual feed.

DN and DTV are rebroadcasting the feed on their systems.

I'm looking for that raw HD feed.

TWC has many feeds, among them are:

Analog on AMC 11, TR 13
DCII on AMC 10, TR 24
PowerVU on AMC 4, TR 18

There are many others, but none are HD.

I'm not sure if there is one, DN and DTV may just be up-conv the standard
MPEG-2 feed to MPEG-4.

Until recently most digital signals were just up-conv of analog feeds.

There are very few true MPEG-4 feeds. TWC is supposed to have one starting
today.

They usually test the signal for several days before the live date.

I'm hoping someone has seen the test card.

Any help is appreciated

Sorry, I can't help. Back in the day, we had a 3 meter Paraclipse dish. In
those days, there was no signal scrambling and you could find the network
feeds, totally untouched. Now, I just subscribe to Dish Network. It seems
simpler than the old days.

You mean to tell me, and us, that you pay money to watch tv with
commercials that have already paid for that program?
How silly!

Kevin,

The small dish services are nice, but I just need the one feed, and if in
fact TWC is not encoding a true MPEG-4 HD feed,
then paying for HD service for a non HD feed would make no sense.

I can tell just by looking what type of signal was used for the original
encoding.

My local cable company was, and still is, using the analog feed of TNT, but
they are up-conv it to digital. It looks terrible.

They are doing the same thing for TWC.

The small dish services do the same thing. I have seen several channels
that they are up-conv.

Saying that they are broadcasting in all digital is true, but if your source
is of low quality, then your end result is not going to be any better.

TWC has been running VC2, but in free access for a long time now. As long
as you have a valid VC2 module you can get the signal.

There are many networks that provide their signal free of charge to end
users. You just have to have the right hardware.

DCII ( Motorola ) has many channels in the clear, but you need a valid
Motorola sidecar to get them.

It's a good deal.

Bill

No. I mean to tell you, and them, that I subscribe to Dish Network. I pay
them and they unscramble a certain number of channels and I get to watch
them. I haven't watched "broadcast" television in about 6 or 7 years. If
you know of a way to receive channels like National Geographic, CNN, The
Sci-Fi Channel, TLC, Discovery and others, totally free of charge, let me
know. And by free of charge I don't mean that I first have to purchase some
piece of esoteric hardware, buy a "gray-market" decoder chip or box, and
fool around with setting it up.

I can see differences in the various signals as I surf through my Dish
Network offerings. And, it looks like The Weather Channel has undergone a
major set change and their signal looks substantially different than it did
a week ago. As I mentioned, back in the day, around 1980 and onward, we
used to get every channel from every bird in the sky. That was when none of
the channels were scrambled and our dish was a 3 meter monster anchored a
couple of hundred feet from the house. At that time, we had the trick
receiver with the toggle switch to move the motorized dish. High tech
stuff!

Then, slowly at first, but steadily, the various channels began to scramble
their signals. You had to then purchase a receiver that accepted a card
with the decoding information on it and begin subscribing to the channels.
Eventually, it became basically unwatchable.

Now, I just subscribe to Dish Network and it can't get much simpler. I was,
in fact, surprised to learn that there is still a hard-core satellite dish
television audience that still has a kind of do-it-yourself approach to
satellite television.
